David Sandeman, Managing Director Welcome to the April newsletter that looks at auction sales in March 2012 and the rolling quarterly and yearly periods. March is a very busy month in the auction calendar so it is pleasing to be able to report on an exceptionally strong set of results. All four of the metrics measured show a percentage increase on their respective periods in the previous year - read below for further analysis.

I am just in the process of compiling an auction market review for Q1 2012 which will focus on the marked improvements seen in the auction market over the last 4 years, and compare it against changes witnessed in the open market. This will hopefully be available early next week so please look out for that.

National Auction Analysis

The results below show a rise in all but 1 of the 36 metrics measured. Of significant note are the double-digit increases seen in the amounts raised for the monthly and quarterly periods, and lots sold was up by 12.2% in the rolling year to 24,544 - the highest number of lots sold in a yearly period since 2007 / 2008.

Residential sales raised over £500m in Q1 2012 - up 14.7% on Q1 2011. The commercial market also fared very well, with sales volumes rising in the month, quarter and rolling year (2.3%, 4.8% and 11.7% respectively). The positive series of auction results observed throughout the first quarter of 2012 indicate a stabilised market with growing confidence and optimism found amongst buyers and sellers alike.
