Essential Auction News

David Sandeman, Managing Director Welcome to the July newsletter that looks back at auctions held in June and preceding periods. After 18 months of continued growth in the UK auction market, June has delivered a slight downturn in the overall monthly figures. Interestingly the vast majority of the decline was in the commercial sector as the tables below show, with only slight declines in the residential sector.

One should not however read too much into the commercial numbers as June is predominantly a quiet month in the commercial sector as none of the London commercial auction houses hold auctions in June. An additonal factor that helps to explain the monthly reductions is that a major regional commercial auction house that accounts for nearly a third of the lots offered held an auction in June 2011 but didn't in June 2012.

Lots offered was marginally up but lots sold, percent sold and total raised all saw single-digit decreases when compared with June 2011. Despite these relatively small declines the quarterly and yearly figures remain positive, with increases evident in 7 of the 8 metrics measured. We are currently in the middle of the one of the busiest months in the auction calendar so it will be interesting to see how the market fares in our next newsletter, due out in early August.

National Auction Analysis

The residential market recorded monthly rises in lots offered and lots sold (7.1% and 2.1% respectively) with quarterly and yearly figures showing further increases. Conversely, the commercial market shows notable falls in lots offered and lots sold in the month but as explained above this can easily be accounted for. Encouragingly the rolling quarter shows only minor reductions whilst the rolling year actually shows increases in each metric.
