Essential Auction News

David Sandeman, Managing Director Welcome to the April newsletter that looks back at auction activity in March and preceding periods. A cursory glance would suggest that the market experienced a tough month when compared with March 2012. However, the falls can be largely attributed to a major London auction house holding their 'Spring' sale in April this year compared with March in previous years, and I expect to see this reflected in next month's newsletter.

I have just published a quarterly review of the residential auction market, which looks at market activity in Q1 for each of the last 6 years - read it here.

National Auction Analysis

As mentioned above it is difficult to draw many conclusions from the monthly figures, only that if the corresponding auction sale was included in this analysis then the figures would have remained fairly static. The long-term outlook remains largely positive, as marginal growth is apparent in lots offered, sold and amounts raised in the rolling year figures.

The commercial market has produced a strong set of results for the first quarter, with 9% and 12% gains in the volume of lots sold and amounts raised respectively.
