Welcome to the November newsletter that looks back at auction results in October and preceding periods. After the auction market experienced a slight decline in activity in September, it is very pleasing to see an emphatic turnaround in October as all of the 36 metrics measured recorded an increase over their comparative period last year.
Overall lots offered climbed 20% to 3,972 lots, whilst lots sold increased by an astonishing 30% to 3,064. Our historic data shows these to be the highest ever recorded numbers in the month of October, comfortably surpassing the previously recorded highs in October 2006. The large jump in numbers could be attributed in part to a major London auction house holding their mid-Autumn sale in November last year but in October this year, however notwithstanding this caveat the statistics remain exceptional. The long-term prognosis also looks positive, as in the last 12 months the gavel fell on almost 1,700 more lots than in the previous 12 months (up 7%), with total revenues of £3.75bn (up almost 12%). National Auction Analysis
The residential market saw huge double-digit increases in both lots offered and lots sold for the month (up 26% and 38% respectively), whilst the total raised climbed by over 51% to £298M. Further increases are evident throughout the rolling quarterly and yearly figures, demonstrating an ever strengthening market with growing numbers of buyers and sellers choosing auctions as a viable route to market.
Gains are also evident across all aspects of the commercial sector, albeit at a more moderated pace than the residential market. Notably, lots sold was up over 9% in October to 702 lots, which helped further propel commercial sales in the rolling quarterly and yearly figures to increases of 15% and 11% respectively. Finally, a quick note on the auction sale rates which continue to impress, as the tables below show rates between 76% and 78% across both sectors. |
