Welcome to the first newsletter of 2014, which looks back at auction activity during December and the 3-month and 12-month periods. Throughout 2013 we saw a strengthening market, with auction sales rising and revenues swelling to often record-breaking levels. December's figures epitomised this trend, with auction sales up 8% on 2012 to 2,675 lots and amounts raised up almost £100M - a rise of 25% on the previous year - more on this below.

National Auction Analysis
The tables below show increases in nearly every metric measured. Only slight falls are evident in the number of lots offered in the residential market, where 100 fewer lots went to auction in December when compared with 2012 (a 3.7% decrease). However sales were up 3%, and the amount raised was up £50M to £295M (a 20% rise) - a record total for December.
Figures for Q4 show slight gains made in lots offered across both the residential and commercial sectors (up 1.7% and 2.8% respectively), however the 7% gains made in auction sales helped push revenues up by 14% (up to £730M for residential property and £411M for commercial property). It is clear to see that auctions continue to provide an attractive and effective means of buying and selling property, and I do hope that the industry maintains or improves upon this position in 2014. |
