Essential Auction News

David Sandeman, Managing Director Welcome to the April newsletter that looks back at auction activity in March and preceding periods. There has been widespread speculation from media commentators that the uncertainty surrounding the result of the forthcoming general election could slow certain markets, and there is evidence of this in the numbers published below. Monthly lots offered and lots sold were both down on March 2014, at 2.8% and 6.2% respectively, whilst total amount raised fell by £25M, to £376.1M.

It will be interesting to see in June and July whether the auction market returns to a level of growth that has, for the most part, been fairly consistent over the last few years.

National Auction Analysis

The recent slowdown in auction activity has been more hardfelt in the residential market, with the number of residential lots offered falling by 5.2% in April compared with a 7% rise in commercial lots offered. In the quarterly analysis, the commercial market saw marginal gains in lots offered (1.3%) and lots sold (2.3%), whilst the residential market saw numbers fall; by 5.4% in lots offered and 7% in lots sold. It is worth noting, however, that the overall quarterly figures are still higher than those achieved in the years leading up to the record highs seen in 2014, as demonstrated in the graph below.
