Essential Auction News

Welcome to the July newsletter that looks back at auction activity in June and preceding periods. Overall lots offered was down 7% last month, from 2,144 lots to 1,993 lots, whilst lots sold dropped by 5% to 1,420 lots. The total amount raised was £197.5M - less than 3% down on June 2018's total of £203.2M, and a marked improvement on the double-digit falls witnessed in recent months.

As highlighted last month, the auction sale rate has remained stable and largely comparative to the long-term average throughout the challenging times of recent past. Last month was no exception; the 71.2% sale rate was up 2% on last year and reinforces the sentiment that suitably priced stock will still attract competitive bidding in the auction arena.

As ever I welcome any feedback you may have regarding the newsletters or indeed the wider market in general.

National Auction Analysis

Residential lots offered and sold fell by 7.3% and 4.8% respectively last month, whilst residential receipts totalled £170.1M - down 4%. Figures for Q2 show residential auction sales decreased by 1.9%, to 4,590 lots, yet residential revenues fell by almost 10% over the same period. An indication perhaps of falling house prices or a rise in smaller value lot sizes being taken on.

In the commercial market 295 lots were offered, 18 fewer than last year, whilst 200 lots sold raising £27.4M - up 5.3% on last year. Q2 figures show a significant drop in commercial auction sales, from 917 lots in Q2 2018 to 759 lots in Q2 2019 (down 17.2%), yet commercial revenues only fell by 5% over the same period.
