Essential Auction News

August saw the usual seasonal slowdown in the auction market, with the summer holiday period and particularly hot weather potentially contributing to quieter activity. Despite this, lots offered were 2.9% higher than August last year, although lots sold fell by 2.6% and the success rate eased to 60.6%. Total raised increased by 4.3% to £179.2 million, with residential lots offered up 4.2% year-on-year, while commercial activity was softer.

Across the regions, the rolling quarter remained largely positive. London continued to record strong growth, with lots offered up 31.1%, sales up 34.9% and total raised up 29.4%. The South-West also performed well, with offered and sold volumes rising 21.3% and 16.9% respectively, while the West Midlands and Yorkshire & The Humber both recorded higher volumes than the same period last year.

Overall, August's results are consistent with the quieter summer period, while the broader market continues to remain ahead of last year's levels. The continued flow of stock coming to auction provides a positive backdrop as the market moves out of the summer lull and into the traditionally busier autumn period.
